SPIRITUAL HEALING
SWEAT LODGE
Connecting with the Natural Laws.
At our core, we understand the importance of cultural sensitivity in substance use treatment. We recognize that cultural beliefs, practices, and values play a significant role in an individual’s journey to recovery.
Spiritual healing will incorporate the use of the sweat lodge and sacred elements. The sweat lodge provides the opportunity to experience an environment supportive of feeling safe, personal healing, medicinal, traditional songs, and a sense of belonging. Talking Circles are deeply rooted in traditional practices and are widely used to promote healing for individuals as well as communities. Talking Circles are a way of bringing people together to pass on knowledge, prayer, values, honoring, and culture.

SUBSTANCE USE

Your wellness vision is important to us. Working together to support and honor your healing journey may include cultural elements, traditions, and community resources. Healing the individual, and supporting the families are crucial components to gaining balance and restoring community connections.

What to Expect
Before joining our program, one of our admissions counselors will reach out to you to make sure that we have the treatment; the Medicine that you need. We will ask you questions about your experiences that brought you to making the decision to seek support for substance use as well as a few other administrative questions. If we do not have the services you need, we will provide you with referrals and resources.
On the day of admission you will meet with one of our admissions counselors who will gather information about your health, mental health, support system, and your goals to start building your treatment plan. We hope to get to know you and your ancestors so we will ask about any connections with tribal communities and your Indigenous language. We will then share this information with our cultural advisory board to provide you with information and Medicine from your People.
Within the first week of admission you will also meet with a member of the clinical team to give you time to share about your mood, thoughts, relationships, experiences, or anything else you want to be sure we understand about you as we collaborate with you on your treatment plan. We may request you complete a few self-report questionnaires to help track your symptoms so we can adjust your plan as needed depending on how you are feeling.
While in IOP you will receive group counseling sessions, and individual counseling sessions as needed. Group sessions are three times per day, three days a week. Morning IOP starts with a talking circle that can feel similar to a process group in other treatment programs. The second group of the day will focus on providing you with information about Native culture and Medicines, or information about enhancing your psychological well-being. The final group of the day will focus on developing skills, goals, and plans to cope with cravings to use substances without using.
While attending IOP you may benefit from seeing a psychiatrist and a therapist for individual therapy and medication management to help in addressing your mental health. If you need a referral, we will be happy to help you with this process. Ideally, these will be the providers that you will continue to see once completed with IOP. Sometimes it is difficult to find the right fit with providers, so let us know if the first folks we refer you to do not work out.
The length of the program can vary from person to person. It is important to remain focused on what goals you have for your time in the program and have those outlined in your plan that you can update as needed with your counselor. Once you are able to work, volunteer, go to school, or return to your household responsibilities is typically a good time to think about stepping down to outpatient therapy and psychiatry without groups. We encourage discussing readiness for this step with the group, your counselor, and a few folks in your support system if possible.
When we provide you with a discharge plan, we hope that we can collaborate with you to create a plan that you are motivated to follow, and that will give you the best chance to continue the progress made at ITT when you return home.
